The intriguing case of the vanishing grandfather ...
... Kim Cattrall uncovers the truth.

Seventy years ago Kim Cattrall’s maternal grandfather, George Baugh unexpectedly walked out on his wife and three young daughters. They never saw him again. His disappearance condemned the family to years of poverty in one of the most deprived areas of Liverpool. Now George’s granddaughter, the glamorous Kim, sets out to uncover the truth.

From a 1980 newspaper clipping, she learns that George's sister, Edna, lived in Liverpool.
Check newspapers here. Following this lead, Kim finds Edna, and her sister Amy, and from them she learns that George may have stowed away to America. Chris Weir, a maritime expert, searches passenger lists
for George’s name and date of birth. On Ancestry.co.uk they find
he tried to stowaway in 1935 to NY from Liverpool, claiming
single status. Passenger lists often include stowaways.

The pieces start to fall in place when Kim’s researcher finds George’s marriage certificate to Isabella Oliver
5th Aug 1939 (Durham). So George is a bigamist!

In Durham County Records Office, Kim checks electoral registers for George’s address. From baptism registers she sees that George had three more children while living in Tadhoe. Tracing the wife of George’s brother in law, Kim
sees a picture of her grandfather at last, and learns that
his second wife had no idea about his earlier family. In middle age the couple emigrated to Australia.
Check Australian immigration lists.

It’s an emotional meeting when Kim reveals the
truth to her mother and aunts – but they are
relieved to know.
